Annual Report 2020 – Gregorian Seniors Forum

Dated: Thursday, December 17, 2020

Glory to God

The Annual Report is a summary of the activities what we have done during the year 2020. Also, this is a tool to communicate with leaders, volunteers and donors about what happened over the year and how the Lord has worked through our church. It is an excellent opportunity to present facts and figures which will help not only inform our members but encourage those who wants to join us to see what our efforts are yielded in the year 2020
In our Saturday, January 25, 2020 meeting we changed the name from Gregorian Active Adult Group to Gregorian Senior’s Forum and elected office bearers for the year 2020

Office Bearers for the year 2020:
1. Vice President : Ben Varughese Nellithara
2. Treasurer : James Vaidhyan
3. Secretary : George M. George
4. Event Coordinator : George Varughese
5. Refreshments Coordinator : Saramma Thomas
6. Public Relations : Mariamma Varghese
7. Charity : Babu John

Peace Garden Project:
We initiated the Peace Garden project and the project started on Thursday, July 27, 2020 and it was completed on July 31, 2020. Total 29 church members contributed and raised $6417.18
The total expenses of $5973.50 including the picnic table ($1410.22) and plumbing work and we had a balance of $443.68. Even though our organization initiated this project, the church committee took over and completed the work.
Let us appreciate the hard work of David joseph & Susan Joseph who took the leadership in completing the project.
And so many well wishes and volunteers. Special thanks to our Achen for his unwavering support for this project.

Mississauga Food Bank:
The request from Mayor of Mississauga for the urgent need to help the needy in the town, we initiated the donation for Mississauga Food Bank and collected a total of $2500.00 donated to the Mississauga Food Bank. Thanks to Ben Varughese Nellithara & Susan Benjamin for bringing the request to us.

Charity Drive:
Babu John expressed the idea of collecting used furniture and new clothes to distribute to the needy, but due to COVID-19 we couldn’t continue our drive.

Public Relations:
Mariamma Varghese did her best in contacting the seniors, those who are sick or not attending also she gave her update during our regular meetings.

Event Coordinator:
Due to Covid-19 Pandemic we didn’t have much activities this year even though George Varughese tried to coordinate few of them.

Refreshments Coordinator:
Beginning of the year, couple of months we had the refreshments arranged by Saramma Thomas but due to the Covid-19 we couldn’t get together at the church

We had seven Virtual meetings. Once a month we are coming together talking, laughing and having fun; isn’t that a wonderful experience. Jokes, Kavitha, discussions of different subjects helping the seniors. We just aren’t meant to be disengaged from one another. When we use our brain and body the way it was intended, we age better.
Presenting the Forum virtually was born out of necessity as a result of the ongoing pandemic, but the format does have its advantages especially seniors like us. One of the great things about the virtual format is that we are not limited by physical space. Also, we will be able to reach a wider geographic audience and offer sessions we wouldn’t be able to do otherwise. We will be able to conduct interactive presentations and live discussions and provide useful information.

Importance of Seniors Forum:
Social connection improves physical health and can have powerful effects on mental and emotional well being. It is an essential component of aging. Strong social connection can strengthen the immune system especially at this time of pandemic. We have never been through something like this. The current Global pandemic is unprecedented. There has been greater national and international devastation (WW1 & WW2). But the COVID-19 PANDEMIC has its own distinctive character. States of emergency, nation-wide lockdown, travel bans, closure of most public institutions and severe economic repercussions. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Canada has already received about 3000 doses of Pfizer/Biotech vaccines and already started to administer to most vulnerable population.

We are a blessed group, so far we didn’t hear anybody among us affected by this pandemic. As Christians, we have a duty to pray for all medical personnel and all those who work day and night risking their own health to care the needy among us. Not only our prayers but to help the needy in our community.

We hope more members will participate and take advantage of the great experience. When we look back, we shouldn’t be regretting, but we will be learning from our mistakes, move forward with greater enthusiasm,

determination and commitment to achieve our goals. We have a group of people highly talented, motivated and dedicated to do the best for our organization and the community. But one thing is certain in any organization and program, participation and involvement are important in achieving our goals

I would like to thank our Achen for his care and leadership.

Ben Varghese Nellithara, James Vaidhyan, George Varughese, Saramma Thomas, Mariamma Varghese and Babu John for full filling their duties and responsibilities in their roles amid the Covid-19 pandemic situation and all who actively participated in programs with their funny questions, jokes, Kavitha, presenting useful information etc.

Our heartfelt gratitude to all our members, volunteers, well wishers for their support during this very challenging year. Throughout the ongoing health crisis, we have come together virtually and participated actively in every meeting. We are all currently living in extraordinary times with our own personal challenges. Our active participation and involvement make the difference. Let us rise and thankful for what we have accomplished. As we look towards 2021 with hope and optimism, may the God Almighty bless us abundantly to work together with further zeal for the greater glory of God. The intercession of Mother Mary and our Patron Saint, Gregorios of Parumala will be a refuge to each one of us.

Activities

During the year, many activities were held and were found to be quite successful and beneficial to all who attended. Although most of the attendees were seniors, many events were open to the entire congregation.

  1. Saturday September 1 2018, the Seniors visited Martyrs’ Shrine in Midland, Ontario, and were able to attend the Holy Mass. Everyone agreed that it was a blessed trip.
  2. Wednesday Aug 22 2018, the Seniors had a formal session regarding smart phone usage and features. Mr. Sony Mankidy and his team explained the usage/features of the smartphones. There were cell phones for sale at a discounted price and all the proceeds from the sales were donated to the church. A raffle was also held for the attendees, Mr. Alex Jacob was the winner and was awarded a price by Mr. Sony Mankidy. A great thank you to Sony and the team.
  3. Saturday, September 22 2018, a computer training class was held at our church by Mr. Mathew Thomas. As an Information technology Architect who covered all the aspects of modern computers. Thanks to Mr. Mathew Thomas for his excellent presentation.
  4. Seniors Forum members presented a group song at the parish night celebration at our Church.
  5. We are planning to have three more events, Financial planning session, Medical forum and a charity drive.
